"A Long Ride Coming" is a deeply personal memoir filled with poignancy and tinged with wry humor. The book takes the reader on a 1,900 mile bicycle ride from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Mexican border and then from Canada through Washington, Oregon, and California. The journey meets steep, challenging terrain and memorable, once-in-a-lifetime characters.
But the book is much more than a story about a bicycle trip. "A Long Ride Coming" unveils a tribute to a father who died when the author was just 18 years old. When told by a doctor to keep the news of his father’s terminal illness a secret, the deception led to nearly 50 years of regret and despair.
Testing his stamina and age, the bike ride begins at the Golden Gate Bridge on September 11, 2014 and ends nearly exactly one year later on the Golden Gate. In between, the author finds solace and a fitting tribute to a father who died too soon.

From the book

The doctor left the room and left my mother, my brother, and myself to fend for ourselves. Fend off such assaults as when just a few days later, the surgeon summoned us to his office. My father was still in the hospital, still reeling from his surgery, when the doctor in all of his professorial genius opined that we were not to tell my father of his terminal disease.
“Keep it to yourselves,” he said in whispered, conspiratorial, haunting tones. “The patient shouldn’t know. If he did, his last few months would be even more uncomfortable.”
So when my father returned home and for a brief time felt good and hopeful, even going back to work for several days, his wife and two sons had the insufferable burden of lying to him. “I’m so damn glad the worst part is over,” he’d say during his short reprieve. “I told you I’m going to beat this thing…”
But we were committed to obeying doctor’s orders, committed to the code of silence.

A Long Ride Coming edition by Buzz Ponce Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

Plenty of people talk about making a long ride along the entire west coast of America, but few do it. Far fewer do it when in their late 60's. And almost none of those older folks who complete such a ride have the ability to creatively write about the experience. Buzz Ponce does. Some travelers research and plan such a journey in great detail. Ponce just rode out and did it and took what came his way. Any long-distance cyclist can relate to long, steep inclines, lousy weather and mechanical difficulties, but Ponce's ride includes graphic descriptions of the beautiful and ugly places he rode through and sets it all in the interesting context of growing up in the Vietnam War era and specifically the tragic loss of his father during that time. Riders and non-riders like me will enjoy reading this adventure.

A Long Ride Coming edition by Buzz Ponce Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

Ponce delivers a captivating narrative of his epic bicycle journey along the west coast of the United States. He expertly paints a mental picture of the seaside cities visited as well as the breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean. He creatively intertwines history into his narrative. A must read for the bicycle enthusiast as well as the lover of the outdoors.
There are few joys in life to compare with reading a compelling book about one person's journey to dedicate a 1900 mile ride to honor his father. Ponce is a true "master wordsmith." I found myself "reliving" my own relationship with my dad as I read this book. Anyone that treasures their parents will find this book a true masterpiece. I could not put in down. I LOVED this book!
A Long Ride Coming by Buzz Ponce is really three books in one. First and foremost, it is a sensitive memoir about a father-son relationship interrupted years ago by bad advice from a doctor to the family before the father died. A two-part bike ride from the Canadian border to Mexico helps resolve many of those issues.
The book could easily have been commissioned by Washington, Oregon and California, as it presents a bicyclist's travel guide for the West Coast. From vistas straight out of tourist brochures to ruddy, dangerous roads that out-of-control logging trucks ramble through, the author tells it all.
My favorite part of Long Ride came in the form of a food guide section. If you really, really enjoy pizza and beer, or Mexican food and beer, or Mexican food and pretty much anything from the bar, this book is for you. I must now make a return trip to Big Sur and eat the Ambrosia Burger at Nepenthe!
A Long Ride Coming was a wonderful story of a man paying tribute to his father by way of a bike ride. Reading the stories of Buzz's bike ride were so entertaining and some times moving. I enjoyed the book immensely. You don't have to be a bike enthusiast to want to read this book, I think anyone would gain something from reading this book. Get yourself a copy and enjoy!
This book should be read by anybody who is a bicycle enthusiast and anyone with unresolved parent-issues. Buzz Ponce does a wonderful job letting the reader in on his feeling of guilt (and anger) over this father's death 50 years ago. You can sense the healing as he takes on not one but two 500+ mile bike rides--both dedicated to his father, Charlie. The back-stories are well-timed and sense of adventure on the ride is absolutely real. If you've traveled the California coast, you will marvel at Ponce's description of the terrain.
A wonderfully written story about a boy of 18 who loses his father, a secret kept and a yearning to fill a deep hole of sadness and grief. A fairly proficient bicyclist, Buzz decides some 45 years after losing a parent that he would challenge himself to ride the entire western coast of the United States paying homage to his father. He takes the reader on an incredible journey, shares the beauty of the beaches and landscape, talks about the people he meets along the way and reflects on life without his father. I highly recommend this book to those who feel taking on a formidable challenge is impossible and to those who love adventure.
I have just completed reading "A Long Ride Coming" by Buzz Ponce. I found this book to be an incredible depiction of a bicycle ride from the Canadian border to the border of Mexico, traversing down the west coast of the United States. Buzz's ability to describe what he saw and felt as he endured the dangers of riding a bicycle on some of the busiest highways in our country to his marvelous description of the scenery he passed through and the people he met allowed me to feel as though I was riding with him. Buzz interjected a lot of American history and a wonderful knowledge of changing times which made me reflect upon the last five decades of life in these United States. He also touched my heart with the sharing of the pain over the loss of his father when Buzz was just eighteen years old, which he has endured for nearly 50 years. Buzz made this ride to honor the memory of his father in an attempt to find peace for himself after all of these years. I believe that he did find some closure but I sense that Buzz, like many people in our world today, is still looking for an answer to some of the questions surrounding the loss of a loved one...questions which, ultimately, can only be answered through a spiritual connection with Almighty God. A fantastic book!
